Join Barbara Gilford, author of Heart Songs: A Holocaust Memoir, as she discusses the psychological impact of being a Second-Generation Holocaust Survivor
Thursday, February 4
7 p.m. to 8 p.m., via Zoom
Children of those who lived through the Holocaust often grapple with their parents’ loss and grief. They have the task not only of retelling the events of their parents’ lives but also filling in missing information and wondering what relationships with lost relatives might have been.
In Heart Songs: A Holocaust Memoir (Amsterdam Publishers), Morristown resident Barbara Gilford shares not only her family’s experiences attempting to flee the Nazi occupation of their hometown, what was then Ostrava, Czechoslovakia, but also her own experience growing up with the weight of the loss of so many relatives she never met. While her father escaped to the United States via England as a young man, most of the rest of the family perished.
Gilford, who holds a master’s degree in social work also has a background as a journalist, uniquely positioning her to write the family history and examine its impact.
